Our silicone product development processes mainly include 3D drawing, prototype, production tool making, and mass molding production.

1. 3D drawing or CAD drawing

A CAD drawing also known as Computer-Aided Drawing is the digital version of the product, which can be rotated to view from any angle, even from the inside. We will have a deeper understanding of your product and offer expert advice. File-type in Solidworks, iges, or Step formats will be needed.

CAD file provided by the customer: Through CAD files, our professional engineers can check carefully every detail of the design. They will evaluate the product design and feasibility for mold making and mass production, and give certain suggestions for improvement if needed.

Our engineering support – If you have only a sketch or idea, but are unable to offer a 3D CAD model, don’t worry, HB Silicone will offer your engineering support.

Our skilled mold design and manufacturing engineers will help you with the drawing by getting involved in the early stages of silicone product development. They will work out the 3D files after a mutual agreement on the final design and send them to you for confirmation.

2. Prototyping

Stereolithography (3D printing) does not currently include a silicone material, so we can’t make a silicone part through 3D Printing. For molded silicone parts, steel tool mold will be needed.

HB Silicone’s internal mold shop is capable of mold machining including CNC and milling machining. Our mold maker will have a single cavity trial mold made for prototyping. Our standard practice is 3~5 days for mold making. 3~5pcs prototypes will be molded as customer requirement on material/ color/ durometer. Our engineers will inspect the parts function, its critical areas before sending the sample out to the customer for confirmation. The prototyping stage includes the following aspects:

  • Tooling design (mold design and programming)
  • Mold Machining (CNC machining and milling machining)
  • Tool surface finish (polishing, coating, texturing)
  • Preparation for prototyping(durometer, material selection, color matching, surface treatment)
  • Prototype making (compression molding)
  • Prototype inspection (engineers inspection)
  • Prototype confirmation (send the sample to the customer for confirmation)
  • Feedback from customer
  • Part and tool mold adjustments (if needed)
  • Prototype making (if needed)
  • Prototype inspection (if needed)
  • Prototype approvement

3. Production tool making

Unlike the prototyping trial mold, the production tool is a multi-cavity mold for more than tens of thousands of silicone products production per month.

It is not suggested to make any change or modification to a production tool once it is finished. A small change can be a reason for mold rejection. It will be a huge loss of time and money.

The production tool mold is a copy of the prototyping trail mold but with more cavities. So it is better to settle down the part design during the prototyping stage, and make sure no more adjustments are needed before we go on with the production mold.

We will go through the following steps in this stage:

  • Tooling design (mold design and programming)
  • Mold Machining (CNC machining and milling machining)
  • Tool surface finish (polishing, coating, texturing)
  • Production sample making (sample color, material, and durometer change can be made if needed)
  • Sample ( inspection (engineers inspection)
  • Sample confirmation (send the sample to the customer for confirmation)
  • The customer confirms the sample and informs us to go on with mass production

4. Mass molding production

Now we come to the mass production stage, which includes the following steps:

  • Compression molding production( 7 steps)
  • Silicone parts surface treatment( printing, oil spray, laser etching)
  • Quality inspection (full-inspection)
  • Packing
  • Delivery
