Babies generally start teething early, before they’re even sitting up on their own, between 3 and 6 months. And when it happens, it can make for one upset baby. Toys for the mouth such as teethers that baby can chew on to relieve sore, sensitive gums. Chomping down on a teether feels good because it offers counterpressure to the rising tooth, and helps the baby to get through this often painful stage.
Teething toys also provide a gateway for kids to the sensory world and prepare their mouths for more complex feeding tasks. Oral motor skills involve the movement of the facial muscles which include the mouth, jaw, tongue, lips, and cheeks. We know babies put everything in their mouths, after all, it’s how they explore the world around them. Silicone teether can also be helpful in teaching babies some coordination and recognition.
Teething toys can be made in various kinds of materials, materials commonly applied on market are untreated natural hardwood, latex, plastic or fabric, Eva, and silicone.
As a safe and environmentally friendly material, silicone has a natural resistance to bacteria, mold, fungus, odors, and stains. Silicone is also durable, long-lasting, and the colors stay bright. Silicone teething toys are more and more popular. Silicone also has excellent temperature resistance, so you can boil the silicone teethers to sterilize or cool the teething toys in the freezer to have the additional benefit of slightly numbing the baby’s gums.
HB Silicone is a professional silicone manufacturer dealing with custom silicone products, custom silicone teether is one of our main businesses. For customers who want to develop their own silicone teether, this post can be a guide for you.
1. Things you should consider before designing the silicone teether
When you start to design your custom silicone baby teether, there are factors you should consider to develop a functional as well as a market welcomed baby teether.
1.1 Target market regulations and safety standards
It is important that you must know the regulations of your target market on teething toys, and make sure your design complies with the regulation standards.
The toy safety standard refers to ASTM F963-17, it covers various aspects of product safety:
- Substance restrictions: Lead, mercury, and other chemicals and heavy metals
- Physical properties: Sharp edges, loose parts, etc
Silicone is an FDA food-grade material, it can be BP, Phthalate, Lead, and Latex-free. And it can pass the flammability test as well. The only thing you should consider is the physical properties, your teether should not be too small or sharp to cause any safety hazards, so you should pay attention to the small parts regulation.
The small parts regulation exists to prevent children from choking on, inhaling, or swallowing small parts (sometimes also referred to as “small objects”). It applies to toys, components of toys, and other articles intended for children under three years of age which are small parts. If a small part fits completely into the cylinder, and the toy or product from which it came is intended for use by children under three, the toy or product is banned because the small part presents a choking hazard.
So when designing your silicone teether, remember to pay attention to target market regulation.
1.2 Know what customers will consider when they choose the teether for their little ones.
Here are things customers frequently consider before buying a teether.
Durability: the teether should be strong and does not break quickly because of the continuous chewing, causing the baby to choke
Safe material: the teether should be FDA-approved, non-toxic, BPA-free, phthalate-free
Cost: a baby teether should be with an inexpensive price that is affordable by most customers
Easy-grip: teethers should be easy for babies to hold with their tiny hands
Texture: ensure the teether have multiple gum-soothing textures
Perfect size and lightweight: the teether should not be too big to hold or too small to cause choking, it should be lightweight for babies to hold
Maintenance and Hygiene: teethers that are dishwasher safe, could be sterilized with steam in a microwave, or boiled
Chilled: Can be chilled in fridge or freezer for extra numbing relief
Multifunctional: act as a teether and a toy, be attractive enough to keep babies happy and occupied
HB Silicone offers design assistance to customers who have trouble with 3D CAD models. It will be helpful for the customer to offer hand-drawing sketches of what your baby teether will look like. The sketch should be as detailed as possible, with labels explaining the various features and functions. Similar products image and physical samples will also help with our 3D working out.
2. Production ways of silicone teether
Compression molding, overmolding, and dispensing/epoxy are three main production ways for silicone teether.
Single color silicone teethers can be easily molded by compression molding like common silicone products.
But silicone teething toys with vivid patterns and various eye-catching colors can help engage the baby’s senses and imagination, and be more attractive to keep your baby happy and occupied.
Silicone overmolding is one of the ways to produce custom teethers with 2~3 colors.
For teethers with more colors, dispensing will be the more feasible way of production. However, as the dispensing cost is high, silicone over-molding is still the most popular production way currently.
3. Add LOGO to bespoke Silicone teethers
For mouth contact teething products, printing and oil spray are not suggested. Embossed or debossed LOGOs are the way for LOGO
4. Our custom silicone teether development process
Below are our production process for custom silicone baby teethers development.
4.1 Custom silicone teether design assessment
When our customer finishes the design of the teether, our professional engineers will review the design, and confirm the feasibility and best production way.
This stage includes programming, CNC tooling, and silicone teether prototyping. Trial teether samples will be produced and sent to the customer for confirmation or test.
4.3 Packing solution
HB Silicone offers packing solutions for customers who need customized packing. The customer will need to offer the packing design.
